April Fools

I read Shelf Awareness Pro every morning.  Each April 1st they do a great April Fools edition.  I still remember the first year I read their April 1st edition, they really got me.  Not since then, but each year they give it a good try.  Here's a link if you're curious about all the fun Book Nerds have:  http://www.shelf-awareness.com/issue.html?issue=1960

Lucky, that's me.

I love getting free stuff, don't you.  Each week I get shipments of an ARC or fabric I've won.  It's great to be lucky.  Today it was a nice box from Random House.  Four ARC's from the Hogarth imprint and a new book bag.  Yay!

I Am Forbidden by Anouk Markovits
The Kissing List by Stephanie Reents
The Watch by Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya
and The Dead Do Not Improve by Jay Caspian Kang

I'll let you know what I think, as I read them.

I read a lot.

Pup and Paperback by Molly Poole

I really do read a lot.  I'm a tenacious reader.  I pick up my book and read whenever I have an extra minute or two.  While Bob watches television, my book is open and I'm reading.  Depending on the year, and what's going on in my life, I read between 100 and 150 books a year.

You might think that I read fast; after all,  2-3 books a week is more than most people read.  But, I'm a slow reader, according to the "What Speed Do You Read" test on the Staples.com website.  Check out your reading speed, here.  This is not a scientific test, just fun.  My rate was 280, the national average for adults is 300.

The Littlest Library

How charming is this?  I found this in my daily Shelf Awareness for Readers email.

Imagine finding a lending library in your local park, grocery store parking lot--or even at the end of your street. Little Free Libraries, the brainchild of two Wisconsin entrepreneurs, are tiny, freestanding containers that can hold a small number of books, anywhere from five to two dozen volumes.
Each Little Free Library can be slightly different. Todd Bol and Rick Brooks designed the first one to look like an old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse. Dedicated to Bol's mother, it is located just a few blocks from the Hudson, Wis., riverfront. But while the actual libraries are so cute they're almost twee, they have a very serious purpose behind them. The men want to help communities worldwide increase access to books, raise literacy--and surpass famed magnate Andrew Carnegie's record of building 2,509 free libraries.
On their site, Bol and Brooks not only sell plans so that you can build your own Little Free Library, but offer premade models and sponsorship opportunities, as well.

Hope this works out.

These are two of my favorite authors, I admit, I have a lot of favorites, but husband and wife, Chabon and Waldman are on the list.

Another interesting note from Shelf Awareness:

Authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman will co-write and executive produce a drama series for HBO, tentatively titled Hobgoblin. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the "potential series centers on a group of magicians and con men who use their skills at deception to battle Hitler and his forces during World War II." Le Grisbi Productions' John Lesher and Adam Kassan will also be executive producers on the project.

Sorry I have to miss this one!

Cool idea of the day. First Books & Books opened a store in the Cayman Islands--a location we still believe needs onsite inspection. Now the store has come up with another venture we want to cover: it's co-sponsoring a film and literary cruise August 2-14 that sails from Amsterdam to St. Petersburg with stops in Stockholm, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Tallin (Estonia) and Berlin (with a little land travel involved). On board the Celebrity Constellation: Debra Dean, author of The Madonnas of Leningrad, who will lead a tour of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and discuss its role in her novel; her husband, poet and actor Cliff Dean; and Shelly Isaacs, film expert and commentator who will host a series of contemporary and classic foreign films that will be shown during the cruise. Books & Books hopes to co-sponsor two cruises a year, owner Mitchell Kaplan said. - from today'shttp://www.shelf-awareness.com/.
